Outdoor Learning

Today, in our English lesson… WE WENT OUTSIDE!

Perhaps our teachers have gone mad? It was FREEZING! It’s a good job we wrapped up warm in our coats, hats and scarves!

We were learning about our five senses and how we can include them in our writing.

When Miss Cunningham opened the old, wooden door I heard a loud creeeeak and an even louder bang as it locked into place. I cautiously stepped outside, the cold, icy wind blew through my hair and I knew that I would need to put my hood up. I felt bitter breeze nipping at my nose. In the distance, I could hear loud cars zooming along the busy roads. Above my head, I could see trees blowing in the wind and birds flying bravely. I thought we were going to spend the whole lesson outside and I could almost taste the freedom.

Reading Reminder!

Please remember to listen to your child read at home every night. Your child can record this in their reading diary for us to check in the mornings.

The books your child has been given matches their reading ability and provide appropriate challenges. Please use the question sheet we gave you at parents evening to support their understanding of what they are reading.

We can see how much the children really love reading in school and we want you to see this at home too!

Reading Walls

At Holbrook School, we are working hard to achieve our reading goals. We hope to inspire children and deepen their love of stories. This means reading them independently, listening to stories as part of a group and even one to one reading with teachers. It would be fantastic if you could continue this enthusiasm for reading at home.

Due to building our reading walls, the children are able to remember all of the stories they have read since September! Which is very impressive (especially as 2C have read over 120 books so far) . This means they can make links between stories, make sensible predictions, summarise what they’ve read, make book recommendations and compare themes. This makes for very impressive Year 2 readers who are moer than ready to tackle anything that comes their way.

English

This term we have been reading a very special book in our English lessons. It is filled with the most wonderful illustrations, poetic phrases and emotive language. The children have read, understood and empathised with the characters in the story so beautifully and maturely that we have been absolutely blown away!
